Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography


Abstract
Using a narrow, flexible needle and lateral approach, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography was performed in 68 cases at National Medical center during the period from Oct. 1974, to June 1976, the results were as follows:
1. Using a 22-23 gauge, narrow, flexible needle, the success rate was much higher than that of the conventional method.
2. The procedure was very simple and easy, using lateral approach instead of anterior approach.
3. Frequency and degree of the complication were much lower -then that of the conventional method.
4. Bile culture was performed in 11 patients. and revealed Gram (-) enteric microorganisms in all. Therefore administration of antibiotics useful against Gram (-) bacteria is recommended before the procedure.
